Bringing It All Together
May 1st, 2008
This morning I read a blog post by Colin Devroe referencing a Jeffery Zeldman article, “The vanishing personal site.” Rather than hosting content in a centralize domain, people rely on outside services like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Ma.gnolia, Flickr and a million other services to host their content.
Colin on the other hand is doing the opposite. Instead he is bringing it all together onto his site and not relying on outside services to host his content. I really love the idea and would love to be able to do it, however, I’m taking another approach, one Colin lists in his post, “Jeffery Zeldman: The vanishing personal site.” I’m publishing everywhere and aggregating back to my site.
I use a several services for my site, Flickr for photos, Ma.gnolia for bookmarks, Twitter for what I’m doing at the moment and Viddler for videos. All this is displayed on my site through aggregation. I chose this route because it’s easy. Many times all I need to do is click a button and my blog is updated with the latest bookmark, Flickr photo, or even Twitter. What could be better? I suppose it depends on how you look at it, the level of control you want, and how many sites you want to have to deal with.
