SingStar!
May 23rd, 2008
I recently picked up SingStar for the PS3, a game I grew very much interested in since first seeing when Sony began talking about it soon after the launch of the PS3. It was an immediate crush because I purchased a few of the Karaoke Revolution games for the PS2 and had more than my fair share of fun with them as did members of my family. So when I found out SingStar was finally coming to the PS3 in the US, it was a no brainer purchase.
It however was a hard road traveled. I looked very carefully at the release date of the game and many sites indicated it’s release was on May 20th. I had that day off, but I was in no mood to walk to Best Buy to pick it up, and since I work about 50 yards from Best Buy I would stop by on my lunch. The next day, I do just that. I scour that store looking for the game to no avail. They certainly had plenty of the PS2 version, one I considered buying a few months ago when they were first released, but wisely saved my money for the PS3 edition instead.
I was disappointed to say the least. I wanted to start rocking out. It wasn’t as if I was going to be able to play it anyway because I have a tendency to play these types of games when I’m home alone. For someone who has done some really embarrassing things on the Internet, this should be old hat for me. There is always a learning curve with this style of game. Not so much in terms of difficulty but with just letting yourself go and belt out these tunes without abandon. Thankfully, the next day they had it in stock and so I grabbed the game with the mics and a PlayStation Eye.
Today, I had about 90 minutes to get to that point and once I stopped worrying about whether I was within the pitch meter, my scores improved. One of the problems I had was in recognizing some of the songs. I listen to very little radio and even though many of the songs I recognized, I hardly knew the words. Sure that’s some of the fun of the game, but it impedes progress and sometimes you just want to sing. That’s what the SingStar Store is for.
I located a friends Online SingStar profile and saw she sang, Torn by Natalie Imbruglia. I know that song! So rather than continue butchering perfectly good alternative music, I decided I would purchase a couple of songs. The first I purchased was Let Me Entertain You by Robbie Williams, and the second Torn. There were a ton of songs available to purchase from the store and some of which I would love to get and some I plan on getting.
I sang Let Me Entertain you and while I did well for part of the song, there were sections where I performed abysmally. Soon, once I get more acquainted with some of the songs, I will upload them to my SingStar profile for all to critcize. I sound really awful, there is no doubt about that. Like I said, I just have to let myself go and belt out these tunes without abandon.
