Indiana Jones is Back!
May 26th, 2008
Yesterday my Mom and I went to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We deiced to see it first thing in the morning so it wouldn’t be as crowded, a good idea for sure because even though it was 9:30 in the morning, the theater was still, maybe not packed, but had quite the crowd.
Now, I am an enormous fan of the Indiana Jones movies. They are probably my favorite series of all time, so when I initially heard that Lucas and Speilberg were even thinking about making another I was frothing a the mouth. What I didn’t know was that it was going to take them this long to make it happened. Still, when I realized they were in production time flew and now, there I was, sitting in the theater waiting for the movie I had wanted to see so much begin.
Wait, there were previews. Okay I had to sit through a bunch of previews, Hellboy 2, something with Brad Pitt and Eagle Eye. Hellboy looked like it could be better than the first and Eagle Eye looked interesting, but then it started, abruptly. The movie began without much fanfare, in fact at first I thought it was another preview. But no, it started.
I thought the movie was outstanding. OUTSTANDING. It really had everything on would expect from Indiana Jones, humor, adventure, chases, puzzles, clues you name it the movie had it. I was pleased that Harrison Ford didn’t look quite as old as I was expecting. They certainly made good use of the soft focus, which was apparent in the diner with Shia LaBeouf.
Speaking of Shia LaBeouf, I actually kinda liked him in the movie. He certainly had the comic timing that complimented Harrison Fords rather well. Would I be willing to accept Shia as the next Indiana Jones, if that were ever to happen? Possibly. There was stunned silence at the end of the movie where Jones’ hat gets blown off and rolls to Shia who picks it up and almost places it on his head, and would have if Indiana didn’t grab it first. That says something. What, is up for debate.
Does that mean there will be no Indiana Jones starring Shia since the passing of the fedora didn’t actually happen? Or is the idea there but not fully developed yet. Lucas did suggest that he would do an Indy 5 with Shia and have Harrison Ford come back as a father character like Sean Connery did in Last Crusade. It all would be interesting, and I suppose as I write this that I would be willing to accept that. One thing is clear, there will only be one Indiana Jones.
Before I end this post, I have to talk about Cate Blanchett. I honestly believe that she is one of the greatest actresses of our time. She completely transforms herself with every role whether it be in Indiana Jones as Irina Spalko as Queen Elizabeth she is always brilliant. Without question I would put her in the same league as Meryl Streep who I also think is one of the greats.
Anyway, that’s all I have. You must see this movie. Everyone must see this movie. The world has waited 20 years for this moment, let’s all not waste it.
