WWDC June 9th
June 4th, 2008
I’m sure this post is going to have me all geeking out and it might be embarrassing to read if you don’t share the same enthusiasm for Apple products like I do, but stay with me. Next Monday, the WWDC or Worldwide Developers Conference which is an annual conference where Apple’s technical architects and engineers provide information to third party developers, begins. This may sound boring and since I am not a developer, most of it doesn’t sound all that exciting even to me but it’s Steve Job’s keynote address that everyone really looks forward to.
There are a couple of things that I’m looking forward to in his keynote and they are updates to the Macbook, iPhone and iLife. I really want to begin doing HD video and currently the software support for AVCHD is slim even though iLife ‘08 supports it. Sadly iLife’s iMovie features are lacking and I as I’m sure many others are hoping iMovie ‘09 is more than just a portable app.
The Macbook as it is, is still a great product, but I could use substantially more than 250GB of hard drive space. If I begin, like I said previously, doing HD video, that hard drive will fill up quickly and I would prefer not to have to lug around an external hard drive while on vacation. In addition and not necessarily a requirement but a speed boost would be nice, longer battery life and a gesture based trackpad.
Finally the iPhone. Depending on what they do with it, I may decided to jump on the bandwagon. While the current version has a lot of great features, the phone I have now LG CU500 does everything I need a phone to do like pictures, video, music, bluetooth and almost anything else I can throw at it. It’s been a really great phone and still holds up well to anything else on the market today. But, it’s not an iPhone the epitome of status symbol. Regardless, I couldn’t not justify the expense.
Now, the next version of the iPhone, and I hope it’s announced this year, could be everything I want it to be. I want it to record video, have a great camera, offer some great applications that sync to my Mac. There are just a lot of really interesting things Apple can do to the iPhone that can make it far and away the best phone on the market for years to come. Apple really needs to do something because there are phones coming out that could challenge it’s dominance.
